Despite being re-introduced to the North American market just a year ago, the current generation of this mid-size pickup is actually among the oldest models in the class, as it dates from 2011. Therefore, it’s no wonder that the blue oval company is already working on a complete overhaul. The next-generation is already in the advanced stage of development and it will hit the market sometime in the next year, as the 2021 Ford Ranger.
The next-generation model is about to come with a lot of novelties, which will make it much more competitive compared to the current model, which isn’t among the most popular models in the class.
- Powerful engine options
- Good estimated towing ratings
- Lots of tech features
- Time will tell
When it comes to the exterior design, one of the things we should expect is the evolution of the current T6 architecture. We count on the implementation of new design solutions and technologies, borrowed directly from the full-size F-150.
This primarily refers to the use of lightweight materials, so the 2021 Ford Ranger should become more efficient. Of course, we are about to see a new styling as well. At this point, it is still early to talk about details, but we presume that a lot of inspiration will be taken from the full-size counterpart as well. Bigger changes in size are not expected.
On the inside, the current model looks okay. Typically for the class, most of the surfaces are made from hard plastics, but things are changing in the automotive industry. Hi-quality cabins are now required even in segments like these, so we count on notable improvements in this aspect. Also, we count on new aesthetics, as well as on a lot of novelties in terms of tech features.
Under the hood, base models will probably carry on with the same 2.3-liter turbo-four that powers the current model. It features quite respectable numbers, as a max output goes around 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to provide quite good towing ratings that go around 7.500 pounds.
Still, higher trims are expected to come with a V6 engine, probably with a 2.7-liter unit, the same one that powers the F-150. It delivers around 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, which should provide even better performances and capabilities.
We also count on a diesel version. This model would come with Ford’s new 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel, which delivers around 250 horsepower. It should be a direct answer to the new diesel version of Jeep Gladiator.
2021 Ford Ranger Release Date and Price
The 2021 Ford Ranger will hit the market next year, probably in the second half. When it comes to the price, base models should go around $24,000.
